Regarding Mr. Buckley’s suggestion that Mr. Bush is no, true conservative, I would disagree. I became a political conservative the year I started college (1972) and I believe my definition should be considered:
- Globalist versus isolationist – this would include driving free-trade, international labor mobility, fluid and transparent financial and governance policies etc.
- Protect and project American interests – this would entail forging strong global partnerships, but also utilizing our military when necessary, even unilaterally as needed.
- Low, competitive marginal taxes, while minimizing and/or eliminating taxes on capital.
- Driving towards an empowerment society whereby the government steps-aside and encourages free-market choices in health, property, and long-term finances (this is how you deal with deficits).
- Supporting the finest education “choices” on the planet – investing, innovating, etc.
- Taking care of the sick and elderly.
- Standing for a just society.
On all fronts, Mr. Bush excels. When I hear Mr. Buckley, Mr. Will, and Mr. Buchanan lately, I’m reminded of the Luddite-Republicans who voted for Smoot-Hawley in the thirties. They need to go stick their heads back in the sand and get out of the way of those of us who actually create jobs and take responsibility for the safety of our country.
